Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Alpha 2 with codename “Precise Pangolin” has been released along with the second Alpha of other Ubuntu flavors such as “Lubuntu, Kubuntu, Mythbuntu, Xubuntu and Edubuntu”. Many of the recent changes to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin “development branch” we already have seen in the past few weeks in earlier posts at LinuxNov. However, let’s check what’s the release notes includes for Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha 2 and Download options.

Highlights of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Alpha 2 Precise Pangolin

  • New package updates:
    • Linux Kernel 3.2.2 (3.2.0-12.21)
    • Upstart 1.4 ” Startup/terminate tasks “.
    • Unity 5.0 in my machine I already have Unity 5.1 because I installed The HUD update for Unity. Unity update brings more Compiz stability, some new features to Ubuntu Unity plugin and Unity Greeter LightDM shows the current wallpaper for currently available user on the login screen as the background of LightDM. Nautilus quick list is added to Unity launcher, can be activated using mouse right click.

  • UbuntuOne integration on Rhythmbox Music player.
  • Kubuntu:KDE Plasma and Applications 4.8 lands on Kubuntu 12.04 Alpha 2.

  • Xubuntu: New greeter and theme.
  • Xuubuntu: Added support to open items with single click and thumbnail support to desktop.

Upgrade from Ubuntu 11.10 to Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha 2 Precise Pangolin

Run terminal, then type

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Or you can use the graphical user interface for the update manager, click Alt+F2, then type “update-manager -d” without the quotes. and follow the on-screen instructions.
