Ubuntu 11.10 Alpha 1 with code name “Oneiric Ocelot” has been released comes with Gnome 3 desktop also comes with Unity 2D instead of classic Gnome desktop incase you don’t have enough hardware specifications for your machine.

Some of the key packages making their first appearance with this Alpha 1 release are:

• Linux Kernel 2.6.39
• gcc 4.6 compiler
• network-manager 0.9

Unity taking place with many gnome 3 applications like Nautilus file manager and gedit text editor. By default Ubuntu 11.10 don’t comes with Gnome shell but you can install it if you want

Gnome shell already available on Ubuntu 11.10 repository so you are not have to add extra repository simply run this command on the terminal.
