Ubuntu 11.04 beta 2 has been released with few packages updates and better performance than earlier releases. Check this post for Ubuntu 11.04 beta 2 release notes, Download links also upgrade instructions from Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick to Natty Narwhal beta 2 included on the release notes.

Use this distribution at your own risk. It’s not recommended to use it in production machines.

I used Ubuntu 11.04 beta 2 as a live session on USB flash disk also installed it with these hardware specifications 2.1 Ghz dual core processor, 2 GB of RAM, and 265MB video card memory.

First impression

Boot up time from USB flash disk was quite impressive and it was really responsive also worked fine with Unity 3D interface, right mouse click can be used in many places even the desktop right now” Beta 1″.

Package Update

As mentioned earlier on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 Natty Narwhal release notes few packages updated such as Linux kernel 2.6.38 – LibreOffice 3.3.2 - GCC 4.5 – Python 2.7 – dpkg 1.16.0 – Upstart 0.9X.org 1.10.0 – Mesa 7.10.1 - Firefox 4.0 as standard web browser - Shotwell 0.9.1 and Evolution 2.32.2.

Dimming the launcher when you press Ubuntu logo panel, gives you a quick focus at currently colored icons.

Drag and drop applications and folder icons to the right launcher for quicker access.

Scroll bar looks smaller also scroll navigations buttons are hidden unless you touch it with your mouse cursor.

Overall Ubuntu 11.04 looks really promising specially with the new changes to unity desktop, also Compizconfig settings manager CCSM offers customizations plugin for Unity desktop interface.

After usage for few days had a multiple compiz crashes, and sometimes it don’t response to halt or poweroff commands to shutdown, so i have to power off the machine manually.

Expected release of the Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal final release April 28th. Stay tuned.
