Pidgin is a free chat client supports most common instant messaging protocols, supports voice and video conversions as well using Farsight2 framework.
Pidgin used to be the default chat client in Ubuntu, but now Empathy taking a place instead of Pidgin in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal.
