So, let’s check out its highlights and download links.

Gimp 2.8.0 new splash screen.

Gimp 2.8.0 has been released after 3 years of development since the earlier stable release 2.6.x. This release brings several new features and improvements to the user interface which eases the usage for users to organize windows such as toolbox, layers, history, pointer, ..etc. Also ability to open several images in tabs using the “single-window mode” which helps a lot to get a quicker access to any of them without bothering to switch between images windows as we have used to do on the earlier stable releases.

Single-Window Mode

It simply includes all windows and images docked on a single window, which gives an integrated look to all windows. Also the “Multi-Window mode” still available for who prefer to use it.

To activate or deactivate the Single-Window Mode, open “Windows” menu and check the “Single-Window Mode”.

Hide Docks

After activating the “Hide Docks”, It gives you more space to work on, because it only keeps the rulers, currently running image, and tabs shows on the top in case there are multiple images currently opened.

To activate or deactivate the hide docks, open “Windows” menu and check the “Hide Docks”.

Multi-Column Dock Windows

Now you can display and arrange the dock windows in a vertical mode by dragging any of the dock windows to the vertical edge of another one.

Layer Groups

Gimp 2.8.0 now allows you to group the layers for complex compositions, and it gives you a proper look with a tree-like structures.

On-Canvas Text Editing

Text editing tool shows on-canvas text editor instead of displaying a separated window for it. Also it support changing the color and font size for the selected text.

Graphics Tablets On Gimp 2.8.0

It enhanced the user experience for graphic tablets users. However, you might experience some issues with some graphics tablets such as Wacom tablets, cause Gimp 2.8.0 uses GTK+2 which is not fully supported for these tablets, hopefully it will be fixed with the next release Gimp 3.0.0 which will support GTK+3.

Install Gimp 2.8.0 On Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin Using PPA

Run Terminal,

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gimp

PPA works on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin and Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot

This caution included on the repository page.

This PPA could break your installed OS. There are dependency issues especially for Oneiric (11.10). Only use it if you know what you do! I’m working with others on a stable and reliable solution.

I am currently using it on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin, and I have installed it using this PPA.
