XAMPP is currently available to install on Linux, MAC OS X and Microsoft Windows. But, in this post we will have a look at how to setup XAMPP on CentOS 6.4 also, as I mentioned up here in the note the installation instructions are the same for CentOS, Fedora, and Ubuntu and many Linux distributions.

Step One

Download the latest release of XAMPP Linux “1.8.1″ from this Link.

Download Page.

Or, you can download it using this command in Terminal,

wget http://www.apachefriends.org/download.php?xampp-linux-1.8.1.tar.gz

Step Two

Extract XAMPP Linux archive package using this command. Make sure you are currently browsing the location you have download the XAMPP archive file, Assuming you the file is downloaded in the “Download” directory for a user called “LinuxNov”. So, open it using this command.

cd /home/LinuxNov/Downloads

Then extract the XAMPP Linux archive file with administrator privileges using this command.

su root tar xvfz xampp-linux-1.8.1.tar.gz -C /opt

It will take a few moments until it extract the XAMPP package to “/opt/lampp” directory. Eventually, it will finish copying and XAMPP for Linux is completely installed and ready to start.

Step Three

Start/Stop XAMPP using these commands.

Start XAMPP for Linux

su root /opt/lampp/lampp start

Stop XAMPP for Linux

su root /opt/lampp/lampp stop

Advanced Start and stop parameters Here.

Step Four: Secure XAMPP

This process won’t prevent XAMPP from running, However, it’s necessary to setup XAMPP security options for localhost XAMPP page, phpMyAdmin, and MySQL, to make sure your personal data is secured.

Run this command which will walk you through the procedures to setup and change localhost, phpMyAdmin and MySQL passwords.

su root /opt/lampp/lampp security

LibreOffice is free and open-source office suite, it works for many operating systems such as “Linux, MAC OS X, and Microsoft windows”, The stable release of LibreOffice 4.0.3 is currently available to install using PPA on Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail, Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal, and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin. Check the installation instructions and the release notes down below.

LibreOffice 4.0.3 Release Notes

This release is bit-for-bit identical to the 4.0.3 Release Candidate 3, so you don’t need to download or reinstall if you have that version already.

The distribution for Windows is an international build, so you can choose the user interface language that you prefer. Help content is available via an online service, or alternatively as a separate install.

Our Windows binaries are digitally signed by The Document Foundation.

For Windows users that have OpenOffice.org installed, we advise uninstalling that beforehand, because it registers the same file type associations.

If you run Linux, the GCJ Java variant has known issues with LibreOffice, we advise to e.g. use OpenJDK instead.

LibreOffice 4.x drops a few long-deprecated features, including support for legacy binary StarOffice files, export to legacy Word and Excel (version 6.0/95), and legacy ODMA document management.

Some menu entries have changed or added. If you miss something, that may be due to the use of customised menu settings from your previous LibreOffice installation.

This version still contains a few annoying bugs, as listed here. Specifically, the German Duden Korrektor extension needs a manual fix.

The latest stable version of Nautilus file manager 3.6.2 which is available on Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail, it does not support the “Backspace” key as a “Back” button function. So, check down below the alternative keys or how to retrieve the “Backspace” shortcut key.

As a part of the recent changes to Gnome Nautilus file manager, Many of features we used to have in earlier release is no longer available like the “Backspace” shortcut key for going back to previous visited location. This issue has been reported as a bug Here, and the importance of this bug is set as LOW priority! Anyway we found a unofficial bug fix for this issue. Before we go with this process, check the new shortcut keys.

The new Shortcut for the “Previous” and “Next” locations

This is the new shortcut keys

Hold ALT + Right or Left Arrow keys.

[How To]: Retrieve the “Backspace” key

This process won’t deactivate the new shortcut keys mentioned up here, it will only add additional shortcut key for Nautilus file manager.

Run Terminal, then open this path,

cd ~/.config/nautilus/

Then open “accels” file using “Nano” or “Gedit text editors and add this line.

(gtk_accel_path “<Actions>/ShellActions/Up” “BackSpace”)

Nano text editor

nano accels

or Gedit text editor

gedit accels

Finally, save the file and quit nautilus file manager using “nautilus -q”.

That’s it for now.

Mouse and Touchpad settings window for Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail no longer display an option to enable or disable horizontal scrolling. So, here’s how to enable horizontal scrolling and natural scrolling on Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail. In the earlier release of Ubuntu we used to enable the horizontal scrolling feature directly from the “Mouse and Touchpad” settings window. Unfortunately, this feature is no longer available to enable directly from the settings window. So, all we need is the configuration editor for Ubuntu, which is pre-installed with package name “dconf-editor”.

Run command by clicking “Alt+F2″, then type “dconf-editor” without quotes.

Form the left side list follow this path “org –> gnome –> settings-daemon –> peripherals –> touchpad”

Check “horiz-scroll-enabled” to enable Horizontal scrolling.

Check “natural-scroll” to enable Natural scrolling.

Also, if you have “Ubuntu Tweak” Installed you could enable “Natural Scrolling” from “Tweaks” tab then select “Miscellaneous”.

That’s it for now.
