I found a really cool collections for gnome panel backgrounds on deviantart designed by half-left looks really good in case you get bored with the default backgrounds and you want to change it.

Does anyone have any idea how to make the indicator applets and such transparent? I had a nice setup back when I had Lucid, but the upgrade killed that. Now I have 12.04; Unity has been completely removed, and I’m using gnome-shell. Changing the transparency of a panel only makes certain areas transparent. Both the indicator applet and the window list applet have their own backgrounds. How do I change them?
